FAQ

Who is Hamazaki?

This is probably the number one question asked of us. The Hamazaki comes from Ed Hamazaki, with whom Sonny originally founded the agency. Ed abruptly left the agency a year and a half after it started to pursue another vocation. We have no contact with him.

What does a marketing group do?

We probably could’ve called ourselves an advertising agency but that’s a bit simplistic. While much of our work is oriented around advertising and marketing-communications, it doesn’t explain our work in events, media, film and television, sustainability and a host of other creative and marketing programs, project or products. Thus, the term ‘marketing’ is what we use as a catchall for our activities.

How is it you can do work in English when you’re all Wong’s?

Well, we’re not all Wong’s. Nevertheless, we consider ourselves bi-cultural with a foot in both Canadian and Asian culture. Most of our staff are educated in Canada, but retain our language and cultural sensibilities, given to us from our parents. I guess you can say we’re lucky that way.

How does a small agency like Hamazaki Wong do so much?

This is a really good question since many people are astonished when they learn everything we do. The simple fact is: we just do it. We work hard, we work smart. And we are motivated to do the work. A familiar refrain at Hamazaki Wong is that ‘the thought is more daunting than that task’. So, once we get past the overwhelm, we get to the matters at hand and do them well.

Another reason why people think we do so much is probably due to the projects we run and or play a major role in like the Leo Awards or the Board of Change. Yes, these are big programs that require significant effort and time. Fortunately, we have great partners, suppliers and friends, all of whom make us look good and allow us to get more done than anyone would have thought possible.
